Whether you are an artist or an art lover, you must have heard of ‘Copic‘. There’s no doubt that Copic markers are the best among all other art supplies though it’s expensive. It’s also a favorite marker of mine.

But do you know what a Copic marker is?

The answer is, Copic markers are the most professional-grade art markers. It’s famous all over the world due to its wide range of colors and smooth application. Copic colors are different from others, and it also provides bright colors than other brands.

This versatile marker contains odor-free and non-toxic alcohol-based ink. You will get a streak-free layering and blending performance using these paint pens. Amazingly, you can create your custom color mixes.

And if you alone can’t do it, the colorless blender will do the work for you.

It’s evident that these are not like other markers. Since you have to pay a bit more for getting these alcohol-based markers, you may think that, “How long do Copic ink last?

Another fact is that the Copic brand has taken quality seriously, and you can use a single marker even for decades. It’s not only by refilling but also Copic is providing nib replacements facility the marker loses its functionality.

Though it was first introduced for the Manga Artists now, it’s become a heartthrob of the artists.

Features of Copic Sketch

Among all other marker types, Copic Sketch markers are the most popular among artists. Even it’s also one of my favorites.

The main reason for its popularity is the wide color range. Amazingly Copic Sketch markers are available in 358 colors. Though there are some alternatives to Copics, no other brands can offer such a massive color range – even close to this number. The skin tones of this marker are also renowned.

These alcohol markers come with double-ended tips – one is super brush nib, and the other is medium broad nib. Super brush tips are by far the most versatile tips and best for getting desired calligraphic strokes.

However, for Copic Sketch, you won’t get other nib varieties like Copic Classic markers. And this is the main difference between Classic and Sketch markers. You can change the same nibs you get with Copic Sketch, where Classic markers offer nine different nib choices.

Copic Sketch marker holds a volume of 2.08ml ink. Though Copic Classic marker contains more ink than this still it’s my favorite and maybe others also. But if I compare it to the Ciao line, then it carries more ink.

Importantly, with a 12ml refill bottle, you can fill the ink cartridge of Sketch markers 6.6 times. And I think it’s much cheaper to get ink refills than new markers.

From my perspective, the oval barrel shape is more comfortable than the round shape of the Ciao marker or the square barrel of Classic markers. By holding the oval shape body, you can easily do your artwork.

Another interesting fact is that you can use the Copic airbrush system in Sketch markers. Most importantly, these are one of the best markers for adult coloring books.

If I come to the price point now, Sketch markers cost the same as Copic Classic markers. So, if you’re not on a budget, you can go for Sketch markers like me! But no, don’t make decisions so soon! Features of Copic Ciao markers are yet to go! So, have patience and move forward.

Features of Copic Ciao Markers

Copic Ciao markers are popular among beginner artists and who want to work with basic colors. And also an affordable alternative to Copic Original or Copic Sketch.

Ciao marker is more affordable because it holds less ink than Copic Classic, Copic Sketch, and Copic Wide markers. It comes up with a 1.66ml ink cartridge. But with a 12ml Copic ink refill, you can fill it 8.5 times, which is definitely more than a Sketch marker.

In terms of color options, it doesn’t provide as many colors as Sketch, but 180 colors are not less though. Similar to the Sketch Copic marker set, it also offers skin tones.

Copic colors are just amazing, and if you use Copic marker paper, you’ll get the most out of it. But if you want, you can also use both of the Copics on canvas for creating unique artworks.

But while using Ciao, you won’t get the chance of using a Copic airbrush system like Copic Sketch or Copic Classic markers.

Ciao marker also comes with a dual-tip feature. One side is medium broad nib for thicker lines, and the other is super brush nib or bullet nibs, whatever you call it. And you will also get the replacement nibs option. But while changing, you have to set the same nibs.

The round body shape of “Copic Ciao” markers attracts many artists. And the lid design is also unique. If your child swallows the lid by mistake, then it’ll prevent choking. So, you can give it to your kids too. However, the Ciao line is budget-friendly than the Sketch marker. And I’ve already mentioned the reason.

So, if you are looking to buy a set of markers for your kids or teens, this set can be a good choice. It’s also the best option for beginners or cost-sensitive people. And by having a Ciao, you’ll get that lesser price doesn’t mean cheaper quality always.

What are Copic Sketch markers used for?

I’ve already mentioned that when you buy, which marker type depends on the purposes you are using. Here I’m explaining some to decide when you should get a Copic Sketch marker set.

Doing Detail Artwork

Copic Sketch markers are perfect for detailed artwork. And when you’re working on a big project, it’s better to use them than other pens. The versatile brush nib of these art markers is great for detail designing. It also helps to create a gradient-like effect to make an additional dimension to the artwork.

The graphic designers also preferred these markers in the back days. But among the other marker types, I mainly like this type due to the super brush that helps me with many detailed illustrations.

Again, if you’re a professional artist and want to give your work some edge, Copic Sketch would be the best option for you. They also look more colorful than Ciao. And this is the one that supports the Copic airbrush system.

Fashion Designers

If you’re a fashion designer, then Copic Sketch markers are the best choice for you. They can be easily blended and are less likely to bleed or smudge with these pens. So they work great for rough and bold sketches of designs.

Again, if you want to create some characters or animals with skin color different from their fur or feathers, a Copic sketch will be the best option. They come up with more shades like human skin tones so an artist can easily differentiate various parts of an animal body and sketch out shadows convincingly.

Brush Lettering

If you are a calligraphy lover or do brush lettering frequently, I must suggest these brush pens for calligraphy. But if you want to stuck with Copics, then Sketch line will be a good choice.

They have a medium broad nib and a super brush tip, giving you impressive calligraphic strokes that will be perfect for your work.

What are Copic Ciao markers used for?

If you’re an artist or just want some fun craft project, then Copic Ciao is the best choice for you because they are cheaper than other variants of this marker type.

But now, let me tell you when you should get a set of Copic Ciao markers instead of a Copic Sketch set.

Watercolor Artists

If your favorite type of art is watercolor painting, I would suggest the best watercolor pens for you. But as you are a Copic lover, you can go for the Ciao line as well.

If you compare Copic Sketch vs. Ciao, then the fine nib of Ciao works excellent for creating a watercolor effect. They also blend exceptionally well together due to their pigment quality.

Beginners in Art

If you’re just starting out in art, then I will recommend Copic Ciao instead of Sketch. The reason is, it has a less expensive price range and also an excellent ink flow.

So it’ll be easier for someone who is not so experienced with Copic pens. It’s a great option to start practicing their strokes without any hassle!

Again, if you have any intention to do basic artworks or looking markers for your kids, then go for the Ciao markers.

Budget-Friendly

If you’re on a tight budget and want to get some markers for you or your kid’s sketchbook, then Copic Ciao is the best option. In fact, you’ll get the same type of nib as Sketch markers at less price.

And in my opinion, the brush tip of Ciao markers works really great. Despite its price, it also provides an outstanding color range. Some people also love the round shape of Ciao markers. Due to its price, it is widely available, however.

Final Thoughts

So, at the end of the Copic Sketch vs. Ciao battle, both are the winners depending on their purposes. By going through all their using senses and features, it’s time for you to pick the right one that suits you.
