Things You Need to Know First: (Important)
It’s a must to use something oily to melt the crayons. You might be thinking that you will do that without adding anything oily but that’s not happening. Crayons are not moisturized enough to be applied on lips.
To make them applicable, you have to add moisture. With the added moisture, they will bring a glossy look and feel comfortable against your lip. Coconut oil is mostly used in this case but if you don’t have it, you can use Vaseline, olive oil, castor oil or vegetable oil. The procedure will be same with either one of the oils.
If you have any question regarding your safety of using these crayon lipsticks, I think I can help. Crayons are basically made of paraffin wax. They are absolutely non-toxic . Haven’t you noticed kids playing with crayons all the time? And when they chewing these crayons, parents don’t go nuts because eating them isn’t harmful.
Although that doesn’t mean you can let babies eat them but my point is that they are safe for stomach. However, the regular lipsticks themselves are made with wax. And, this is another reason you can surely try Crayon lipsticks.
Note: Apart from the fun facts, I suggest you to know your skin type before using these lipsticks. With any kind of skin issues, you better stay away from the experiments.
Do you have any empty lipstick tube or chapstick tube? If you have, that will come in handy while storing the melted Crayon. If you don’t have, you can simply take any small container or empty eye shadow palette or empty container of a lip balm and use that to keep your new lipstick.
The advantage of storing them in tubes is that you’ll not have to use fingers while applying. If you’ve already stored in a container, you can use a lip brush to apply.
Procedure to Make Lipstick with Crayons: Step by Step
I’m about to explain every detail step by step so that you don’t face any troubles once the procedure of making homemade crayon lipstick is on.
I’m about to explain every detail step by step so that you don’t face any troubles once the procedure of making homemade crayon lipstick is on.
Step 1: Pick Your Set of Crayon
The procedure will start with picking the Crayon for kids. Crayola is widely used when it’s about crayons. So, you can either pick that or anything else that you like. If you already have one in your house, that will be fantastic. As you have the set now, decide the color you want.
Step 2: Get Your Color Ready
Have you decided the color of crayons you want on your lips? If done, get that color wet so that it becomes easier to get rid of the paper that wraps it up. Then take a knife and cut it into small pieces so that melting process takes lesser time.
Step 3: Select The Oil or Vaseline
Personally, I love coconut oil for both my skin and hair. And so goes for the lips. You’ll need a tablespoon of coconut oil for one piece of Crayola. You can also perform the procedure without adding coconut oil at all. I’m sharing this information because some people don’t like the smell of coconut oil.
Or if you’re just missing coconut oil, I have alternative ideas for you. Take a spoon of Vaseline instead. They will bring amazing results. For your acknowledgement, you can also use olive oil or vegetable oil or castor oil. Either of them will work perfectly fine when you’ll melt the crayons. Below I’m sharing the ways to melt the crayons.
How to Melt The Crayons (Easy Ways)
You can melt the crayons in three different ways. Each one is easier than the other.
Over The Stove
Get ready with a pan. Pour medium height of water in it and let it be heated on stove. Keep the temperature medium too. Now is the time for the glass jar. Make sure that the jar is heat-resistant.
Put the pieces of crayon in it and add a tablespoon of coconut oil or Vaseline or any other oil I’ve mentioned above. Now you have to place the jar inside the pan that has warm water in it.
As the water boils, the ingredients inside the jar will start melting. You can use any wooden spoon to stir the mix for better and quick result.
Make sure that the water height isn’t too much that the water enters into the glass jar. While steaming and stirring, you’ll know when the mixture is ready for the next level.
With Microwave
If you don’t want to cook your lipstick up in a stove, I have an alternative that is the easiest ever. You can simply put the mixture in a microwave and heat it for about a minute or some more (you’ll know how much time you need).
When the heating part will be done, you can take that out and then stir it to have a smooth finishing. I personally always like the pan process because it gives me time to stir the mixture and thus the outcome becomes a magic.
With Candle and A Spoon
Are you still confused about the heating phase because your lack microwave? Well, don’t be. Can you find any bigger spoon and a candle in your kitchen? If you find them, your job will be done. Put the oil or Vaseline and crayons in the spoon and lit the candle.
Now hold the spoon with some clothes so that your hand will not be heated as the spoon does. With the flame of the candle, the pieces of Crayola will start melting. You’ll not need much time for this but don’t burn your hands though.
Step 4: Store the Melted Crayon
Once the heating and mixing is done, take out the glass jar and pour the mixture into the container or tube you’ve chosen. If you’ve done this in a big spoon, then you can pour the mixture directly. I personally love to store it in a tube rather than any container. But it’s totally okay if you feel otherwise.
Step 5: Let the Mixture Cool Off
For the next part, do nothing. I meant wait for your brand new lipstick to cool off. I find this part the hardest because I can’t wait to wear on the lipstick I’ve made myself.
Enjoy
Apply your own lipstick with either finger or lip brush. Crayola colors are well pigmented. So, they will look wonderful on your lips. The oil will take care of your lip and won’t let it dry.
FAQ: You Need to Know
When I heard about DIY Crayon lipsticks first, I myself had so many questions to ask. As I have used them a lot and researched a lot too before using, I surely can help you with some questions people also ask.
Q: Is it safe to use crayons to make lipsticks?
Although I already have answered this question but I’m ready to repeat again so that you don’t apply it with any fear in mind. Crayons are made of non-toxic wax.
And thus the non-toxic crayons are absolutely safe for you to use. They will not irritate your skin or cause any harm to your stomach in case you lick your lips with crayon lipsticks. This is why every parent trust their children with crayons and you can trust them with your lips too.
Q: How to make crayon lipstick with water?
If you’re thinking of using only water instead of adding any oil to crayons, I’m afraid you can’t do that. For smooth texture and make the crayon paste applicable, you have to add any kind of oil (not soya bean or kerosene of course) mentioned above or Vaseline. Coconut oil is mostly used but you can continue the procedure without coconut oil specifically. Olive oil or castor oil can be your match.
However, if you wonder what the contribution of water in the whole procedure of homemade Crayola lipstick is, I have an answer for you. If you choose to do the heating in a stove, you’ll be needing a pan of water.
Just like I’ve mentioned in the procedure, the glass jar of Crayola and oil has to be put in the middle of the pan. As you heat the pan, the water will start boiling and with that steam heat, the Crayola and oil will start melting. This is the part of water that’s needed in making crayon lipstick.
Finally: Here’s Something Crazy
Don’t call me crazy but I have actually done a little experiment earlier. I came up with the idea of mixing Crayola colors together to make something new. And guess what, it worked. I did a little study on the combination of colors and then made something I would really like. If you’re looking for something like this, you can pick your own colors and make something new.
Besides, you can add glitters to your mix if you feel like wearing something different. Don’t pick any kind of glitters though. Choose the kind of glitter that will not harm your lips either way. If you have super sensitive skin, I would rather suggest not to go for glitters.
There are times when my friends keep asking me about the name of my lipstick and I reply with a smile. If you want to surprise your girls with your magic colors, go ahead. It will bring so much fun without costing nearly anything. Thank me later when you fall in love with these crayon lipsticks.
